TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS AT CHINATOWN – LIGHT-UP CEREMONY AND STREET BAZAAR

        The Chinese New Year Celebrations 2007 will be held from Saturday, 27 January 2007 to Saturday, 17 February 2007 at Chinatown. The official light-up ceremony will take place on 27 January 2007 from 7pm to 11pm. There will also be a street bazaar held from 27 January 2007 to 17 February 2007.

2        On 27 January 2007, the following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate the light-up ceremony.
       
        From 3pm to 11pm:
        a.  New Bridge Road (between Upper Cross Street and Kreta Ayer Rd); and
        b.        Eu Tong Sen Street (between Outram Road and Upper Cross Street)
       
        From 3pm to 12 midnight:
        a.        Pagoda Street;
        b.        Temple Street;
        c.        Trengganu Street;
        d.        Sago Street; and
        e.        Smith Street.   

3        Mosque Street will also be converted into two-way traffic throughout the light-up ceremony from 3pm to 11pm.  All public buses serving New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street will be diverted during the road closure.

4        As for the bazaar, the following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6pm to 11pm for weekdays and from 6pm to 12 midnight the following day for weekends from 28 January 2007 to 16 February 2007. On 17 February 2007 (Chinese New Year’s eve), the same roads will be closed to traffic from 3pm to 12 midnight.

a.        Pagoda Street
b.        Temple Street
c.        Trengganu Street
d.        Sago Street
e.        Smith Street

5        Motorists are advised to avoid the above mentioned roads and the peripheral roads leading to the affected area.  Members of public intending to go to Chinatown are strongly encouraged to use public transport services.  Auxiliary Police Officers will be stationed at all affected road junctions to assist motorists and regulate traffic.
